What it is:
Retrieval of ocean plastic and derelict fishing gear from remote hard to reach coastal areas. Love The Sea has created an efficient, low impact approach by deploying ocean enthusiasts on an organized mission to clean areas otherwise forgotten. Our team is dedicated to clean and monitor all coastal regions of Maui County and beyond.
how we do it:
We make a strategic plan, unique for each cleanup region.
- We start by identifying a troubled area and access the logistics required for the cleanup.
- We deploy a reconnaissance mission to the troubled area and access environmental sensitivities, potential hazards while collecting data for the before and after impact analysis.
- Weather windows and vessel requirements are all accessed and confirmed during reconnaissance to be sure a successful and safe cleanup can be achieved.
- We work cautiously yet proactively with a safe emergency response plan in place. Our efforts are backed up with permits, insurance.
- After the day of extraction, we return to the cleanup site with the marine biologist crew, to document the positive impact on the coastal habitat.
minimum equipment & necessities:
- One jet ski with oversized sled.
- One jet ski with rescue sled.
- One boat (25 ft), preferably with oversized sled attachment.
- Blowup SUP squatsh (14 ft L x 6 ft W) for extractions where jet skis are not permitted.
- Cutting tools (battery powered sawzall, serrated pruning knives, cable cutters)
- Throw ropes for hauling
- Tie down straps for lashing
- Reef walkers
- Gloves
- VHF two way radios
- Parley bags (30 minimum)
- Dry bags

Clean up schedule:
7AM - Skippers meeting and volunteer briefing at launch dock (1 hr).
8AM - Proceed as a group fleet towards the cleanup area (1 hr).
9AM - Use jet ski with rescue sled to drop teams of two until all ground crew is spread out along the coastline for picking plastic and net debris until the area is clean and bagged.
Full bags are positioned for retrieval by the jet ski with the oversized sled and or SUP squatsh for later transfer to the boat.
While the bags are being transferred, each two man team is being relocated to a new cleanup site where the process will be repeated.
Process continues up to four hours until the cleanup area is clear of all debris and/or hauling capacity has been reached.
1PM - All vessels and volunteers return to launching point.
2PM - Transfer all debris bags to trucks and trailers for hauling to LTS’s base yard for sorting at a later date.
3PM - Finish.

community involvement:
- Highlight a LTS ambassador as lead athlete for each event who publicly promotes their stand against plastic pollution
- Selected special OPS team of waterman & woman (surfers, paddlers, divers, etc) Note: volunteer positions are limited depending on cleanup location and number of vessels required
- Enroll a business, central to the chosen cleanup site as a custodian of their own coastal region
- As community leaders, LTS youth and coalition partners are recognized participants in every event
